Granite Countertops

Solid Surface Countertops

Solid surface countertops are  a completely man-made product.  It is the only material that features sinks that are directly seamed to the countertop with no gaps or caulks.  Available in hundreds of colors, it can be manufactured to have the look of granite particles to veined marble to solid colors.  It also comes in many finishes from dull to glossy.

How is it made?
It is created from resins, acrylics, polyesters, pigments and fillers.  Particles added to the mix can give the appearence of texture.  It also machinable and can be cut and formed into almost any shape.

Durability
Solid surface countertops are very dense and resist staining, scratching and chemicals.  However, they are not as strong as some other countertops.  Trivits are recommended for hot pans and cutting boards should be used when cutting.  Damage, however is fairly easy to fix as the the color and pattern go all the way through the countertop.  Often just using a scrubbing pad or and abrasive cleaner can repair minor cuts and scratches.  Deep nicks and damage should be fixed by a professional but are usually virtually invisable after the repair.

Sinks
Due to the nature of this product, custom sinks can be made and installed in just about any shape and color imaginable.  Other standard top mount and undercounter mount sinks are completely free to be used as the surface is solid all the way through and cannot be damaged by water or other liquids.

Cost
These tops are almost all installed exclusively by professionals trained by the manufacturers.  Although this is the case, the product itself isn't as expensive as some other countertops coming in around $40-75 per square foot.  The color and style you choose will affect its price.
