Stainless Steel Countertops

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a cool contemporary material normally associated with professional kitchens.

How is it made?
Normally these come in several different grades.  Typically 304 stainless steel, which has more nickel in it than lower grade steels, are used.  Thicknesses can range between 12-16 guage with 16 guage normally used in residential applications with 14-12 gauge used for industrial usage.  These kind of tops can be fabricated into any shape and configuration wanted.  Soldered joints are not safe for food prep areas so these should be welded and polished.  Not all stainless steel countertops are plain or brushed look.  Using different buffing techniques, the manufacturer can create many different looks and dramatic patterns.

Durability
Stainless steel tops, despite the name, CAN become corroded and stained.  Household cleaners containing bleach can harm the top if not wiped up right away and acidic foods left on the counter will stain.  Surface stains can be removed with a sponge and a scouring clenser such as comet and light scratches can be blened in using a scrbbing pad.  Deep scratches and dents can be impossible to remove completely and you may have to buff the entire surface to create a uniform look after doing your repair.

Sinks
Typically, stainless tops have matching stainless sinks cut, welded, and built into them.

Cost
Cost for just the countertop can range anywhere from $45-$80 per square foot depending on the manufacturer.  Installation, sinks, and backsplashes will bring the cost up depending on the options.
