The Ultimate Checklist for Your Kitchen Renovation
Dreaming of a kitchen re-do? A successful kitchen renovation project begins long before the new cabinets arrive. Use our planning checklist to make the most of your update.
1. Prioritize the updates and changes you want. Write down what works, what doesn’t, and any specific changes you require, then rank them. We suggest you complete this step before you call a contractor or designer. Your list may look something like this:
- Priority level 1: improve pantry storage, add a beverage refrigerator and snack area, update the style, materials, and color of the cabinets and counters, and switch to an induction cooking surface.
- Priority level 2: create easy access to my air fryer and stand mixer, eliminate the double wall ovens, make it easier to see and use my spice collection, and improve the lighting.
- Priority level 3: increase island seating, remove the unused desk area, add a second dishwasher, and have a more expansive sink.
Your designer will now have a clear set of goals and guidelines. You don’t need to solve the problems you present—the designer will do that—but clarity around what matters most is a great way to plan a successful update.
2. Shop for new appliances. Select these early in the process, as the sizes and specifications of the appliances often drive the layout. This will also help the designer best allocate your budget. Be clear about whether you want a specific range, refrigerator, or feature. Sometimes, an appliance doesn’t align with a kitchen’s size, scale, or shape (or the project budget), so the designer can help you devise an alternative plan. We recommend visiting an appliance store to discover new features, styles, and options. Take basic measurements of your existing appliances before you go.
3. Inventory what you have. Before proceeding with a new kitchen plan, consider what you use in your existing kitchen and what you want to keep and store. Since you will be paying for new storage, it is always wise to go through your existing cabinets, even if your goal is more storage.
4. Think about your budget. This can be a hard one as renovation costs are always going up, and what you want to spend may need to be more realistic for your prioritized list. Calling an expert to help you connect your goals with a project cost or range can be helpful. It can also be beneficial to look at real estate listings online for your neighborhood to compare home prices for updated and non-updated kitchens. Having that prioritized list you created can help you see if the project can be accomplished to your satisfaction on your budget. Would you be content if you got your top priorities but not the items lower down on your wish list? Do you need to reprioritize to accommodate a smaller budget? Are there replacement options, creative substitutions, or changes that get you to the same place but for less – like a similar but less expensive counter or backsplash material? Or an appliance with less bells and whistles?
5. Collect inspirational pictures. Do you see similarities in the kitchens you covet? Waterfall islands? Appliance garages? Two colors of cabinetry? All-white color schemes? Your designer will connect the dots between what you need and want and how it will all work with the style and decoration of your home. There’s always a way to bring in the flavor of an inspirational picture, even if an exact copy doesn’t work.
