When Upgrading with new cabinetry is better than Updating with cabinet refacing:

While kitchen and bath refacing (changing the color of your cabinets and the stile of your cabinet doors and drawer fronts) is versatile and often more affordable than new cabinets, it’s not always the right solution. Consider new cabinetry in these cases:

1. Your Cabinets Are Damaged or Poorly Built

If your cabinets have water damage, weak joints, or particleboard that’s deteriorating, refacing won’t address these issues. Replacing your cabinetry with NEW cabinets is often the better long-term investment.

Red Flag: Sagging shelves or cabinets pulling away from the wall are signs that refacing MAY not be enough (although, if the damage is isolated to a specific cabinet or two, we may be able to find a solution that doesn’t require a whole new kitchen purchase).

2. You Want a Completely New Layout

Refacing doesn’t allow for major layout changes, like adding an island or moving cabinets. If your kitchen feels cramped or outdated, a full remodel with new cabinetry might be necessary. Alternatively, we may be able to use some of your existing cabinetry while modifying or adding new cabinetry.  We call this a “Reface Plus.”

Example: A Scottsdale homeowner with a small galley kitchen may need custom cabinets to optimize space and improve flow.

3. Your Budget Allows for a Full Renovation

If you have cabinets that are more than 15 years old, and your budget allows for new cabinetry (see our blog on new cabinetry costs in the Phoenix area) new cabinets might offer more flexibility with regard to kitchen flow improvements and, of course, will improve the longevity of your kitchen. This is especially true for older homes in Glendale or North Central Phoenix, where outdated cabinetry may not support refacing.

3. You have the time for a full kitchen remodel

While other kitchen upgrade options like painting, redooring, or refacing take from a few days to a week on average – and usually allow for you to continue to use the kithchen appliances in the evenings – all new kitchen cabinetry requires much more substantial demolition and installation effort.  This means your kitchen will be unusable for two or more weeks, on average.

How to Decide What’s Right for Your Kitchen

Not sure where to start? Ask yourself these questions:

  • Are my cabinets structurally sound? (Check for damage or wear.)
  • Do I like my kitchen’s current layout?
  • Will my budget support all new cabinets?
  • How quickly do I need the project completed?
